Valentine’s Day is coming up soon and I’m sure there are a lot of couples out there focused on planning something special with their significant other. I have provided a list of some date ideas that put a twist on some traditional dates and include some unique options suitable for the Hallmark holiday or for a future date night, because who said you should dedicate one day out of the year to show your partner your appreciation and L-O-V-E?
1. Wine & dine
I believe the best way into anyone’s heart is through their stomach, woman or man. We all need sustenance in the form of food, so why not make a pleasant, romantic morning, afternoon or night of it?
No, you didn’t see that incorrectly. Morning, afternoon or night for a date is perfectly acceptable because your relationship, like mine, abides by no rule book. Do you enjoy a buttery stack of pancakes? Great. Go out to breakfast and enjoy a mimosa or two with your lover. No time for breakfast, you say? No problem! Seek out a scenic spot and meet up with your partner during lunchtime, because nothing says, “I love you” more than taking time out of your busy schedule to sit down and enjoy each other’s company.
When our schedules allow for it, Z and I have our favorite go-to spot for dinner. We can always count on Guytannos restaurant to serve up phenomenal dishes. Our favorite entree served at Guytannos is the Cedar Plank Salmon, featuring Atlantic salmon, bourbon maple pecan glaze and a butternut squash purée. It is delicious.
For our morning breakfast dates, we choose the unconventional. Ocean Mist, a dive bar located in Wakefield, Rhode Island sits directly on the beach, looking out onto the Atlantic ocean. Live music from local and national genres take the stage at night, but during the summer months, early bird patrons rally to claim seats on the outside deck and enjoy the misty morning breeze and ocean waves that carry in surfers. Order whatever sounds good to you because their breakfast menu is solid. I’m a sucker for a well-made eggs benedict and just about all of their options take the cake. Z raves about the Breakfast Burrito, a worthy adversary against hunger pangs.
2. ” I love your laugh”
Going on a date shouldn’t be stressful, it should be memorable, exciting and most importantly, new. Comedy is a matchless choice for a date with your best friend and partner, especially when it is at Mohegan Sun’s Comix Roadhouse. Dancing, karaoke and talented local and national comedians are just the beginning of an entertaining night. They say laughter is the cure for anything, so why not enjoy some food, drinks and funny fodder to reconnect with your beau? Z and I attended a show that featured numerous stand-up comedians. One comedian in particular, Tyler Hittner, entered the spotlight with a riotous act. I urge anyone looking to satisfy their funny bone to attend a show featuring this comic.
3. Lean on me
There’s no better way to feel young and giddy again with your better half than ice skating. If you’re anything like me and have no grace or balance, you may find ice skating a little intimidating, but that’s the fun of it! Holding hands, leaning, falling with each other will remind you of the butterflies you had on your first date. During winter, standard ice rinks begin to open, but what if you want to switch up the scenery? Gurney’s Ice Skating Rink in Newport, is positioned right by the sea and overlooks the picturesque Newport Bridge. Admission is affordable ($10 for adults) and this year Gurney’s has partnered with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Rhode Island and encourages guests and locals to “Donate to Skate” by brining any item of clothing to receive complimentary skate rentals!
4. Get crafty
Couples painting nights are an excellent way to create a memory with your partner. Muse Paintbar in Providence offers a multitude of fun sessions that wouldn’t be complete without food and drinks while you paint. Muse Paintbar also supports their community by donating 5% of their profits to local causes.
5. Take a trip
Valentine’s Day is just one day, but extending those 24 hours to weekend-long trip with your sweetheart is a treat for both of you. From the fast-paced alpine ski slopes and snowshoe trails, to cozy hotel spas, New Hampshire is a great getaway during winter. When you do choose to make the trip, be sure to include New Hampshire’s Ice Castles on your itinerary. LED lights frozen inside the ice glitter as you walk through the towering structures made entirely of ice, this is truly a scene straight out of a fairy tale and a must-see!
6. Race to the finish line
Do you share a competitive drive or enjoy adrenaline-inducing activities together? The SuperCharged Go Kart Racing is Connecticut’s fastest indoor racing experience, offering two different race tracks and a Trampoline Park. When you’ve finished burning rubber, make a pit stop at the Boost bar and grille. Z and I have been dying to try this after hearing about it from my parents (yes, my parents have a need for speed). Personally, I was sold when I heard that the karts are all-electric, zero emission!
7. I’m winning when I’m with you
Consider yourselves avid gamers? Flip Side in Westerly, Rhode Island is not your ordinary bar. Stocked with a variety of nine vintage and modern pinball machines, customers can enjoy a game while sipping on their choice of drink. Flip Side owners, Mark and Dana, keep a rotating array of local brews on tap such as Grey Sail, Revival and a personal favorite, Whalers.
8. Dancing into your heart
Dancing represents an unspoken language of romance and has been an expression of togetherness. For centuries, dancing was used as a form of courtship between two strangers, using the slightest touch as its basis for intimacy. You have two left feet, you say? No problem, that’s why there are dance classes for couples. Fred Astaire Dance Studios in Narragansett is currently offering a Valentine’s Day special featuring 2 private lessons, 1 group class, 1 practice party, plus a bonus coupon of $30 off your next studio purchase! Learning and performing together requires teamwork
I hope that heading didn’t freak you out. The bodywork I’m referring to has to do with massage. Do you feel relaxed yet, because I certainly don’t (I am well-overdue for one)! An excellent date option is a couples massage. It’s not necessary to commit to the entire “spa package”, just simply signing up for an hour or ninety-minute massage together is a date that won’t break the bank and is entirely just for the two of you.
We’ve gone to Home Salon and Spa in Connecticut on recommendation by my parents and love it. Each room is unique and the staff are thorough and attentive to your needs. Not to mention, the prices are very reasonable considering some other spas we’ve considered
10. Luxury Cinema
Movies are great, but the theaters in general aren’t the most enjoyable environments to watch an hour long movie in. Sticky floors, spilled popcorn and uncomfortable seating, are a few of the unpleasant factors you might have experienced while going to see a movie. But what if there was a different alternative, say, a luxurious alternative? The Mystic Luxury Cinema combines an enjoyable atmosphere and comfortable reclined seating with the lowest priced concessions in the region — that’s right, hot food and adult drinks are welcome and they won’t break the bank!
